      town, northwestern Madhya Pradesh state, central India, lying just east of the Kali Sindh River. Sarangpur is located on an ancient site. It has a number of Jaina and Hindu ruins, including a 12th-century Jaina statue. It rose to importance in the 13th century under Sarang Singh Khichi, for whom it is named, and was a chief Mughal trade centre. It passed to the Dewas princely state by treaty in 1818. An important commercial and agricultural trade centre, it is also engaged in sugar milling and hand-loom weaving. Pop. (2001) 32,294.
