Baldwin V

Baldwin V

▪ king of Jerusalem
born 1177, Jerusalem
died August 1186, Acre, kingdom of Jerusalem [now ʿAkko, Israel]

nominal king of Jerusalem who reigned from March 1185 until his death a year and a half later. The son of William Longsword of Montferrat and Sybil, the sister of King Baldwin IV, Baldwin V came to the throne when his uncle died of leprosy at the age of 24. The able knight Raymond III, count of Tripoli, acted as regent for the young king, in 1185 managing to obtain with Saladin a four-year truce that gave the kingdom of Jerusalem a much-needed respite from Muslim attacks. Upon his death Baldwin was succeeded by Guy de Lusignan, Sybil's second husband.
