Zimmerman, John Gerald

Zimmerman, John Gerald
▪ 2003

American sports photographer (b. Oct. 30, 1927, Pacoima, Calif.—d. Aug. 3, 2002, Monterey, Calif.), helped develop modern sports photojournalism. He was a pioneer in the use of lighting at indoor arenas and was the first to use remote-controlled cameras to capture the action of a sporting event. Zimmerman was a navy photographer during World War II before working his way through the ranks of Time-Life and other publishers. In 1956 he was hired as one of the first photographers for Sports Illustrated, for which he eventually shot 107 covers. His most famous works included an image of Wilt Chamberlain that Zimmerman shot from the backboard and a 1980 photo of Olympic diver Jennifer Chandler that was taken underwater.
