      British association football (soccer) manager and coach (b. March 31, 1913, Oldham, Lancashire, Eng.—d. Feb. 16, 2002, Guildford, Surrey, Eng.), was from 1946 to 1962 the first and longest-serving full-time manager of England's national football team as well as the Football Association's director of coaching. Winterbottom appeared in 25 matches for Manchester United (1934–37) until a spinal injury ended his playing career. After World War II service in the Royal Air Force, he was invited to become England's team manager despite having no managing experience. England qualified for all four World Cups held during Winterbottom's tenure but failed to advance past the quarterfinals. He retired in 1962 with an overall record of 79 wins, 28 losses, and 32 draws. He was made OBE in 1963, advanced to CBE in 1972, and knighted in 1978.
