▪ 2005Frederick Thomas WinterBritish steeplechase (jump) jockey and trainer (b. Sept. 20, 1926, Andover, Hampshire, Eng.—d. April 5, 2004, Swindon, Wiltshire, Eng.), was the National Hunt champion jockey four times in an 18-year riding career (1947–64) and then champion trainer eight times between 1965 and 1987, when he was forced to retire after suffering a massive stroke. His many victories included the Grand National (twice as a jockey and twice as a trainer), the Cheltenham Gold Cup (twice as a jockey and once as a trainer), and the Champion Hurdle (three times as a jockey and four as a trainer); at the time of his death, he was the only man to have won all three major races in both roles. Winter was made CBE in 1963.
