American lawyer (b. May 7, 1928, Detroit, Mich.—d. Sept. 18, 2004, Beverly Hills, Calif.), established the concept of palimony—the right of a longtime, but unmarried, live-in partner to sue for alimony—in the 1976 California Supreme Court case

Marvin. Mitchelson won fame as a divorce lawyer to the stars, but his Hollywood lifestyle drew the attention of the Internal Revenue Service. He was disbarred and sentenced to two years in prison for tax fraud in 1993, but in 2000 he successfully petitioned to regain his license to practice.
