      American religious leader who, as the presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church from 1965 to 1974, pursued a socially progressive and activist agenda, supporting such issues as the ordination of women as priests and bishops and the withdrawal of investments from South Africa in protest against apartheid (b. Oct. 3, 1910—d. July 19, 1997).
