“Chick”
American sports broadcaster (b. Nov. 27, 1916, Buda, Ill.—d. Aug. 5, 2002, Los Angeles, Calif.), was for more than 40 years the play-by-play radio and television announcer for the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association. Witty and sincere, he was credited with the coining of several sporting terms, including air ball and slam dunk. As a commentator for the Lakers, Hearn served as both cheerleader and critic. He enjoyed nine championship seasons with the team, and in the 1970s he even served as its assistant general manager. From 1965 to 2001 he broadcast a streak of 3,338 consecutive games, and he called his final game when the Lakers clinched the NBA championship in June 2002. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1991 and the American Sportscasters Hall of Fame in 1995.
