      American publishing executive (b. Dec. 2, 1915, New York, N.Y.—d. Dec. 18, 2000, New York), was the last surviving son of newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst and served the family's media interests for more than 30 years, including acting as chairman of the board from 1973 to 1996, but found himself most in the public eye when his daughter, Patricia Hearst, was kidnapped (1974) by the Symbionese Liberation Army guerrilla group, subsequently participated in a bank robbery the group staged, and was later captured, tried, and imprisoned.
