▪ 2001American theatrical producer (b. July 24, 1920, New York, N.Y.—d. April 22, 2000, New York), provided financial backing for more than 100 shows on Broadway and the West End theatre district in London. Using money inherited from his father, Cohen began producing shows in the 1940s, achieving his first success with the hit drama Angel Street (1941), starring Vincent Price. Among Cohen's other notable successes were the 1964 production of Hamlet, starring Richard Burton, and the 1967 production of Harold Pinter's The Homecoming. In 1967 Cohen also produced the first telecast of the Tony Awards ceremony. His last production, Waiting in the Wings, starring Lauren Bacall, opened on Broadway in December 1999.
