▪ 1998Welsh association football (soccer) player who was the "Golden Boy" of Welsh soccer from 1949 to 1968. Allchurch, an inside forward known for his superb ball control, scored 251 goals in 694 league matches, mainly for Swansea Town, Newcastle United, and Cardiff City, made a then-record 23 goals in 68 appearances for Wales, and was instrumental in guiding Wales in 1958 to its only appearance in a World Cup final, where it narrowly lost to Brazil in a semifinal match (b. Dec. 16, 1929—d. July 9, 1997).
