The yellow or amber-coloured berry grows from a 2.5-centimetre (1-inch) white flower on a creeping rootlike stem, or rhizome. The stalks grow to a height of 7.6–25 cm (3–10 inches).Eskimos and Sami collect the sweet, juicy berries in autumn to freeze for winter food.
