Reaching 18,406 ft (5,610 m) high, its symmetrical, snowcapped cone is the highest point in Mexico and the third highest peak in North America. The volcano has been dormant since 1687.

volcano on the Veracruz-Puebla border, south-central Mexico. It rises on the southern edge of the Mexican Plateau, 60 miles (100 km) east of the city of Puebla. At 18,406 feet (5,610 m) above sea level, Citlaltépetl's symmetrical, snowcapped cone is the third highest peak in North America after Mount McKinley, Alaska, and Mount Logan, Canada. The volcano has been dormant since 1687. Citlaltépetl was first climbed in 1848.
