Eating disorder, mostly in females, in which excessive concern with weight and body shape leads to binge eating followed by induced vomiting.

It usually begins in adolescence or early adulthood and is associated with depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem. Bulimia can have serious medical complications, such as dental decay, stomach rupture, and dehydration, and can be fatal. Treatment may include psychotherapy. Unlike those with anorexia nervosa, most bulimics remain close to their proper weight.
