      town (township), Windham county, southeastern Vermont, U.S. Brattleboro is situated on the Connecticut River at the mouth of the West River and is surrounded by the Green Mountains. The original settlement around Fort Dummer (established in 1724) was chartered in 1753 and named for Colonel William Brattle, Jr. For a time in the mid-19th century it was a popular health resort known for its pure spring waters. The town includes the villages of Brattleboro and West Brattleboro.

      Local economic activities include printing and the manufacture of paper and lumber products and optical goods; summer and winter tourism is of major importance. Brattleboro is the seat of the School for International Training, the Austine School for the Deaf, and the Brattleboro Retreat, one of the largest private psychiatric hospitals in the United States. Also located there are a campus of Norwich University and the Holstein (cattle) Association headquarters. Creamery Bridge, a well-preserved covered bridge, is 2 miles (3 km) west. Rudyard Kipling (Kipling, Rudyard), the English author, married Caroline Balestier of Brattleboro in 1892 and lived for several years at an estate north of the village. Area 32 square miles (83 square km). Pop. (1990) 12,241; (2000) 12,005.
