city, seat of Crow Wing county, central Minnesota, U.S. It is situated in a forest and lake-resort region south of the Cuyuna Range along the Mississippi River, about 60 miles (95 km) north of St. Cloud (Saint Cloud). The area was inhabited by Ojibwa Indians when it was visited in 1805 by explorer Zebulon Montgomery Pike (Pike, Zebulon Montgomery). Founded in 1870 as a Mississippi River crossing by the Northern Pacific Railway, the city was given the maiden name of the wife of the railroad owner, John G. Smith. It grew as a lumbering and railroad centre. The city's Paul Bunyan (Bunyan, Paul) Amusement Center, a popular tourist attraction in the second half of the 20th century, contained lumbering exhibits, amusement park rides, and a tall (26 feet [8 metres]) animated figure of the legendary lumberjack. Lumbering still contributes to the city's economy, but tourism is now the primary economic factor. Paper milling and financial services are also important. Brainerd is a regional trade, retail, and health care centre. Camp Ripley, a military training facility, is about 10 miles (16 km) southwest. A community college campus is located in the city. The Paul Bunyan Trail, a paved hiking and biking trail, begins in Brainerd, and both Crow Wing State Park and Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area are nearby. Inc. 1881. Pop. (1990) 12,353; (2000) 13,178.
