      large, persistent, atmospheric high-pressure centre that develops over the subtropical region of the North Atlantic Ocean. It is a subtropical high-pressure cell that moves northward during the summer. Usually there is a second cell, the Bermuda high, that forms to the west; this high-pressure centre often is associated with warm, humid weather in the eastern United States during the summer months.
