1. a negatively charged ion, as one attracted to the anode in electrolysis.
2. any negatively charged atom or group of atoms (opposed to cation).

Atom or group of atoms carrying a negative electric charge, indicated by a superscript minus sign after the chemical symbol.

Anions in a liquid subjected to an electric field migrate toward the positive electrode (anode). Examples include hydroxyl (―OH-; see hydroxide), carbonate (―CO32-), and phosphate (―PO43-). See also ion; Compare cation.
