strip-farming

strip-farming
n [U]
a system of farming (sometimes called the open field system) which was common in Anglo-Saxon Britain and lasted until the common land began to be enclosed by fences in the 13th century. Different fields were divided into long strips in which farmers could grow food for their families. Each farmer had several strips of land in different fields, so that the good and bad areas of soil were shared among the community.
