National Savings Certificate

National Savings Certificate

(in Britain) one of the types of investment (= plan for investing money) offered by National Savings. People buy the Certificates for a fixed period, usually five years, and at the end of the period receive the amount paid plus interest. National Savings Certificates were introduced in 1916 as a way for the government to borrow extra money during World War I.
