Wardha

Wardha

India
city, eastern Maharashtra (Mahārāshtra) state, western India, lying near the Wardha River southwest of Nagpur. Situated on major routes between Nagpur and Mumbai (Bombay), it is closely linked with the history of Nagpur. The city was important in the national freedom movement; the Sevagram ashram (religious retreat) founded by Mohandas Gandhi (Gandhi, Mohandas Karamchand) close to Wardha was later the headquarters of Vinoba Bhave (Bhave, Vinoba), a disciple of Gandhi. Rashtra Bhasha Prachar Samiti, a national association for the Hindi language, and the All-India Village Handicrafts Association (Akhil Bharatiya Gramodyog Sangh) are located in Wardha. The city has several colleges affiliated with the University of Nagpur.

The surrounding region lies within the Wardha River valley at the foot of the Satpura Range. Agriculture is the chief economic activity; crops include millet, cotton, and oilseeds. Handicrafts are made and sold throughout the region, and small-scale industry (cotton ginning and pressing, sugar processing, and the manufacture of explosives) has developed. Pop. (2001) city, 111,118.
