The Sudirman Range is located in the Indonesian part of New Guinea, known as Irian Jaya. The rugged range, which may have no pass lower than 13,000 feet (4,000 m), rises to Jaya Peak (formerly Mount Sukarno and Mount Carstensz), at 16,503 feet the island's highest peak, and 15,750 feet at Mount Pilimsit (formerly Mount Idenburg). The mountains extend for 200 miles (320 km) west from the Jayawijaya Range to the base of the Vogelkop Peninsula.
