▪ American scholarborn Aug. 3, 1857, Davenport, Iowa, U.S.died April 24, 1934, ChicagoU.S. scholar and Humanist noted for his writings on classical Greek art and thought.Shorey graduated from Harvard in 1878, was admitted to the bar in 1880, and later studied in Germany and Greece. He taught at Bryn Mawr College and the universities of Chicago and Berlin. A man of vast erudition, Shorey was reputed a brilliant teacher and lecturer, especially in the fields of Greek poetry and philosophy. His writings include The Idea of Good in Plato's Republic (1895); Horace: Odes and Epodes (1898); The Unity of Plato's Thought (1903), his summary work on Plato; The Assault on Humanism (1917); What Plato Said (1933); and his edition (with English translation) of Plato's Republic (Loeb Classical Library, 1930–35). He was a frequent contributor to Classical Philology, of which he was managing editor from 1908 until his death.
