Mufu Mountains

Mufu Mountains

▪ mountains, China
Chinese (Pinyin)  Mufu Shan  or  (Wade-Giles romanization)  Mu-fu Shan

range at the border of Hunan, Hubei (Hupeh), and Jiangxi (Kiangsi) provinces, east-central China. The Mufu extend northeastward for more than 125 miles (200 km), from near Pingjiang in Hunan to the Yangtze River (Chang Jiang) valley west of Jiujiang. The elevation of the range averages about 3,300 feet (1,000 metres), but Mount Mufu itself, the peak from which the range takes its name, reaches 5,236 feet (1,596 metres), and Mount Jiugong, farther east, reaches 5,062 feet (1,543 metres). The range divides the Yangtze valley from the valley of the Xiu River. To the north of the range is an area of low ridges and hills stretching down to the Yangtze plain. The Mufu Mountains are rugged and forested. The range is a source of timber, wood oil, and other forest products, and tea is grown on its slopes.
