Two years later she married Reginald Donald Smith, drama writer and producer for the British Broadcasting Corporation. In 1951 she published School for Love, the story of a 16-year-old boy in war-ravaged Jerusalem, notable for its characterization of the central figure, the repellent Miss Bohun.Manning's main body of work is the Balkan Trilogy (The Great Fortune, 1960; The Spoilt City, 1962; Friends and Heroes, 1965). These three books, set in Bucharest, trace the relationship between Guy Pringle, a British cultural representative, and his wife, Harriet, against a background of the shifting balance of power in Europe. A Levant Trilogy (The Danger Tree, 1978; The Battle Lost and Won, 1979; The Sum of Things, 1980) followed.
