▪ British chemistborn Jan. 2, 1765, London, Eng.died March 10, 1847, LondonEnglish manufacturer, chemist, and discoverer in 1801 of niobium, which he called columbium.Because of his expertise in analysis, Hatchett was frequently called on as a consultant. Mineral substances found in Australia (hatchettine or hatchettite) and North Carolina (hatchettolite) were named for him. Hatchett gave up chemistry on his father's death and succeeded him as coachbuilder to the king.
