      lawyer and politician whose reorganization of the British Conservative Party at the local level greatly facilitated the party's victory in the 1874 general election, the first decisive Conservative triumph since 1841. He was better known later, however, as a member of Lord Randolph Churchill's four-man “Fourth Party” under the Liberal government of 1880–85. Also including Sir Henry Drummond Wolff and future prime minister Arthur James Balfour, the group harassed both Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone and the Conservative opposition leader in the House of Commons.

      Gorst sat in the House of Commons from 1866 to 1906, except for the years 1868–75, when he spent most of his time in travelling throughout England and Wales to establish sufficient party committees in all potentially Conservative constituencies. He held no office in Benjamin Disraeli's Conservative ministry of 1874–80 but was solicitor general under the 3rd marquess of Salisbury in 1885–86.
