▪ Japancity, southern Aichi ken (prefecture), central Honshu, Japan, facing Mikawa Bay. The city has been well known for the manufacture of cotton textiles since the Edo (Tokugawa) era (1603–1867). Mandarin orange orchards grace the mountain slopes behind Gamagōri, which also serves as a seaside resort. There are hot-spring spas nearby. The city is connected by bridge to offshore Take Island, which has a Shintō shrine dedicated to the goddess of beauty. Pop. (2005 prelim.) 82,105.
