Cho Sok-chin

Cho Sok-chin

▪ Korean painter
also called  Sarino (Korean: Small Jade)
born 1853, Korea
died 1920, Korea

noted painter of the late Yi dynasty (1392–1910) whose paintings were nostalgic re-creations of the decadent traditional Confucian style of China and Korea.

Born into a family of court painters, Cho was early sent to China to study with the old masters. On his return, he specialized in paintings of carp and portraits of Yi monarchs and was subsequently appointed to official position and made a local magistrate. After the fall of the Yi dynasty, he helped establish the Academy of Painting and Calligraphy and also the Association of Painters and Calligraphers to train artists in the classical style.
