▪ Indiaalso called Chitaldrugcity, eastern Karnataka (Karnātaka) state, southern India. A cotton-trading centre and terminus of a spur railway line in the Hagari River valley, it has industries that include cotton ginning and pressing. It is the site of massive fortifications erected by Hyder Ali of Mysore in the 18th century. Remains of the 2nd-century-CE city of Chandravalli are to the west. The Vanivilasa Sagara Dam, on the Hagari River, provides irrigation for rice, sugarcane, and cotton in the surrounding area. Pop. (2001) 122,702.
