Chambly Canal

Chambly Canal

waterway bypassing a series of rapids on the Richelieu River between the Chambly Basin and Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, in Quebec province, Canada. Built between 1833 and 1843 and improved in 1850, it is nearly 12 miles (19 km) long and has nine locks, a lift of 80 feet (24 m), and a normal draught of 6.5 feet (2 m). Vessels up to 112 feet (34 m) long and 22 feet (7 m) wide can be accommodated. With the smaller Saint-Ours Canal, south of Sorel, it permits uninterrupted water communication for about 90 miles (145 km) from the main body of Lake Champlain to the St. Lawrence River.
