▪ Brazilalso spelled Campos dos Goitacazes , also called Camposcity, northeastern Rio de Janeiro estado (state), eastern Brazil. It is located 35 miles (56 km) up the Paraíba do Sul River from its mouth on the Atlantic coast of eastern Brazil, at 43 feet (13 metres) above sea level. One of the most important commercial cities of the state, it produces sugarcane, coffee, rice, corn (maize), and feijão (beans) and processes alcohol and livestock products. The deepwater fields of the Campos basin are the largest of Brazil's oil reserves. The city has road and rail connections with Rio de Janeiro, Vitória in the state of Espírito Santo, and the cities in the Paraíba valley. Campos dos Goytacazes is also accessible by river and air. The city is home to two rival football (soccer) clubs, each of which has its own stadium. Pop. (2005 est.) 381,400.
