- BioShock
-
computer and console electronic game created by game developer 2k Boston/2k Australia and released in 2007. BioShock impressed critics with its detailed story line and innovative play, which helped earn the game a coveted top-20 slot on GameRankings.com, a Web site that tracks game reviews and ratings across the Internet. The game contains elements of the popular System Shock series of games, which was created by the same development team.BioShock puts players in the shoes of Jack, who survives an airplane crash and sets out to explore a city that has been submerged in water. The game takes place in a demented version of 1960, where players battle mutated, armour-clad humans known as Big Daddies. Little Sisters, a primary source of energy in the game, are protected by the Daddies and can either be killed for their resources or rescued. This wrinkle introduces an element of morality into the game and influences the story line. By gathering items known as mutagens, players can mutate and develop useful abilities such as telekinesis. An array of special weapons and other items are also available. An ambitious project that managed to successfully combine elements from the first-person shooter, stealth, and role-playing game genres, BioShock won Spike TV's 2007 Best Game award and X-Play's 2007 Game of the Year award. In addition to critical acclaim, BioShock enjoyed commercial success, prompting plans for a sequel and a film based on the game.
