Baetic Cordillera

Baetic Cordillera

▪ mountains, Spain
Spanish  Sistema Penibético

mountain system comprising the Andalusian mountains of southeastern Spain. The northern range (called pre-Baetic in Andalusia and sub-Baetic in Valencia) runs about 360 miles (580 km) from Cape Trafalgar in Andalusia to Cape Nao in Valencia, and it continues in a submerged form to the Balearic Islands, an extension of the range. The southern range of the Baetic Cordillera extends a shorter distance from the town of Estepona in Andalusia to Cape Gata, on the southeastern tip of Spain. Separating the two systems is a complex series of structures, traceable in longitudinal corridors and high basins for 180 miles (290 km) between the cities of Antequera, Guadix, and Baza and again between Lorca and the Sangonera (Guadalentín) River valley. The interior mountains of the southern range include the Sierra Nevada, with the highest peak of the Iberian Peninsula, Mount Mulhacén, rising to 11,421 feet (3,481 metres).
