n.
Any of a series of councils held in the Lateran Palace, a former papal residence, in Rome between the seventh and the 18th century, five of which (in 1123, 1139, 1179, 1215, and 1512-1517) were ecumenical. The fourth, often considered the most important, produced the doctrine of transubstantiation.
