      Syrian politician (b. 1938, Khirbat al-Ghazalah, Syria—d. May 21, 2000, near Damascus, Syria), was a loyal ally of Pres. Hafez al-Assad (Assad, Hafez al- ) (q.v.) and served his country as speaker of the People's Assembly (1981–87) and as prime minister from November 1987 until March 2000, when he resigned amid charges of economic mismanagement and corruption. Zuʿbi, who was also expelled from the ruling Baʿth Party, was still under investigation at the time of his death. He reportedly shot himself.
