▪ 2005

American political scientist and writer (b. Oct. 17, 1918, Waco, Texas—d. Sept. 6, 2004, Carpinteria, Calif.), was the author of numerous nonfiction political science books but was best known for the work of fiction he co-wrote with Eugene Burdick, Fail-Safe (1962), which—with its theme of accidental nuclear attack—struck a chord with a nervous public upon its release at a time of heightened Cold War tensions. Fail-Safe was filmed in 1964 and was dramatized live on television in 2000.
