▪ 2008Mark Yakovlevich WeilUzbek theatre producer and directorborn Jan. 25, 1952, Tashkent, Uzbekistan, U.S.S.R.died Sept. 7, 2007, Tashkent, Uzbekistanfounded (1976) and ran the Ilkhom Theatre, the first independent theatre in the Soviet Union. Weil studied drama in Moscow and at the Tashkent Institute of Theatre and the Arts before founding Ilkhom (Uzbek for “inspiration”) in Tashkent. The Russian-language experimental group became immensely successful, addressing conditions in contemporary society through plays by new artists (among them Weil himself) and new stagings of classics. In 1983 Ilkhom staged its first sold-out performances in Moscow. After the breakup of the Soviet Union, Ilkhom toured Europe and the U.S., notably in Seattle, where Weil's family settled. Weil's television productions included the 1996 documentary The End of an Era: Tashkent. He was fatally stabbed outside his apartment building.
