cofounded (1946) the International Federation of Body Building and Fitness (IFBB) and created a worldwide following that eventually led (1998) to bodybuilding's provisional status as an Olympic sport. With his older brother, Joe, Weider produced the fitness magazine Your Physique, which also served as an avenue for selling fitness equipment and nutritional supplements. The brothers organized the first Mr. Olympia contest in 1965 and were responsible for the discovery of Arnold Schwarzenegger, who inspired widespread interest in the sport when he starred in the film Pumping Iron (1977). Weider, who served as president of the IFBB for some 60 years, opened IFBB branches in more than 170 countries. France appointed Weider to the Legion of Honour in 2000 for his studies on Napoleon Bonaparte.
