      (WAYNE JAMES MCMEEKAN), U.S. actor (b. Jan. 30, 1914, Traverse City, Mich.—d. Feb. 9, 1995, Santa Monica, Calif.), took Broadway by storm as the leprechaun Og in Finian's Rainbow (1947), a performance that earned him the first-ever Tony award for acting, and he went on to score another stage triumph and win a second Tony as the wily Sakini in The Teahouse of the August Moon. A wiry character actor who demonstrated his versatility in a range of roles, Wayne appeared onstage as Ensign Pulver in Mister Roberts (1948), an eccentric uncle in The Ponder Heart (1956), and a hypochondriac in Send Me No Flowers (1960). Some of his most notable film credits were as a barber in Wait Till the Sun Shines, Nellie (1952), a music impresario in Tonight We Sing (1953), and the husband of a woman with a multiple personality in The Three Faces of Eve (1957). On television Wayne appeared as the Mad Hatter in the "Batman" television series of the 1960s, in the title role in "Norby" (1955), as a tycoon in "The Good Life" (1971-72), as inspector Richard Queen in "The Adventures of Ellery Queen" (1975-76), as Willard ("Digger") Barnes in "Dallas" (1978), and as Dr. Amos Weatherby in "House Calls" (1980-82).
