portrayed the amiable bus driver Stan Butler on the hit British television situation comedy On the Buses (1969–73) and in three hugely successful spin-off movies, On the Buses (1971), Mutiny on the Buses (1972), and Holiday on the Buses (1973). After performing in pantomimes and variety clubs (often with future comic star Benny Hill as his straight man), Varney got his break on the sitcoms The Rag Trade (1961–63), The Valiant Varneys (1964), and Beggar My Neighbour (1967–69) before becoming a household name with On the Buses. He later worked in Australia and New Zealand.
