Vallone, Raffaele
▪ 2003
“Raf”
Italian actor (b. Feb. 17, 1916, Tropea, Italy—d. Oct. 31, 2002, Rome, Italy), was one of the leading stars of Italian Neorealist films of the 1940s. Though an associaton football (soccer) player in his youth, he became a journalist and was discovered while researching Riso amaro (1949; Bitter Rice) for director Giuseppe De Santis, who offered him a part. Vallone starred in other De Santis features and became one of Italy's top draws, but when the Neorealist movement faded, he moved to France. He played the lead in a 1958 Parisian stage production of Arthur Miller's A View from the Bridge, for which he won great acclaim; he reprised the role in director Sidney Lumet's 1961 film version. A supporting role in El Cid (1961) landed Vallone a number of Hollywood jobs, in which he most often was typecast as a rugged Mediterranean. He continued to act until late in life—onstage, in movies, and in many Italian TV films.
