Uppman, Theodor

Uppman, Theodor
▪ 2006

American baritone (b. Jan. 12, 1920, San Jose, Calif.—d. March 17, 2005, New York, N.Y.), originated the title role of Benjamin Britten's opera Billy Budd at its premiere at Covent Garden, London, in 1951. Uppman enjoyed early success in opera, earning praise in 1948 for his performance as Pelléas in Claude Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande in San Francisco. When his career stalled, he gave up singing and became a labourer for an oil company in California. The hard outdoor work gave him the muscular, tanned appearance he needed to win the part of the handsome sailor. His performance was widely praised, and he reprised the role for an NBC television broadcast.
