      Sri Lankan lawyer and politician who was a reform-minded member of parliament for the moderate Tamil United Liberation Front, a Harvard University–educated legal scholar in the field of international human rights, director of the International Centre for Ethnic Studies in Colombo, and an advocate of a peaceful solution to the ethnic Tamil rebellion against his homeland's Sinhalese majority rule; he was assassinated by a suicide bomber (b. Jan. 31, 1944—d. July 29, 1999, Colombo, Sri Lanka).
