Robert Lee Thaves 
      American comic strip artist (b. Oct. 5, 1924, Burt, Iowa—d. Aug. 1, 2006, Torrance, Calif.), sketched the award-winning nationally syndicated Frank and Ernest, a one-panel comic feature that following the adventures of the pun-cracking tramps as they delivered their wry commentary, usually from a park bench but also as they traveled through space and time and morphed into animals, plants, and even planets. Thaves began producing the strip in 1972 while working as an industrial psychologist. In 1997 his son, Tom, became a collaborator, and Thaves gradually transitioned into semiretirement.
