▪ 2002“Tad”Polish-born American journalist and author (b. July 25, 1926, Warsaw, Pol.—d. May 21, 2001, Washington, D.C.), was working as a foreign correspondent for the New York Times when he broke the story of the abortive 1961 invasion of Cuba by U.S.- financed Cuban exiles at the Bay of Pigs (Bahía de los Cochinos). Szulc later wrote at greater length about the incident in The Cuban Invasion: The Chronicle of a Disaster (1962) and published a biography of Fidel Castro, entitled Fidel: A Critical Portrait, in 1986. Szulc worked at the Times from 1953 to 1972, when he left to become a freelance writer. Among his other books were Pope John Paul II: The Biography (1995) and Chopin in Paris: The Life and Times of the Romantic Composer (1998).
