      British cricketer (b. June 17, 1930, Gorton, near Manchester, Eng.—d. June 11, 2000, Manchester), was one of England's finest fast bowlers, renowned for his extraordinary accuracy and consistency. In his long playing career for Lancashire (1950–68, captain 1965–67) and England (1951–65), Statham took 2,260 wickets (average 16.36), including 252 in 70 Test matches (average 24.84), and achieved 100 or more wickets in a season 13 times, with a season high of 139 in 1959. Statham formed a successful partnership with Frank Tyson in the early 1950s but reached the top of his form in a remarkable partnership with the more flamboyant Fred Trueman. After retiring from the game in 1968, Statham served Lancashire as a committee member (1970–95) and president (1997–98); he was appointed CBE in 1966.
