July 31, 2004, Montevideo), was a cofounder and the first president of Frente Amplio (FA), a leftist political party formed in 1971 to break the hegemony of Uruguay's two controlling political parties, the Colorados and the Blancos (Reds and Whites). He made two unsuccessful runs (1971 and 1989) for the presidency.
