      American editor and longtime influential publisher, notably of the Chicago Defender, the national voice of African-Americans; he used his formidable role to champion civil rights, including the integration of the armed forces, the breaking of the colour barrier in major league baseball, and the coverage of a presidential press conference by a black reporter (b. Nov. 25, 1912—d. May 28, 1997).
