▪ 2007Flint SchulhoferAmerican horse trainer (b. May 30, 1926, Aiken, S.C.—d. Dec. 14, 2006, Aventura, Fla.), rode (1950–62) as a steeplechase jockey before training some of the greatest champions in Thoroughbred racing, including two Belmont Stakes winners (Colonial Affair in 1993 and Lemon Drop Kid in 1999) and five Eclipse Award recipients (Mac Diarmida, 1978 turf male; Smile, 1986 sprinter; Fly So Free, 1990 two-year-old male; Rubiano, 1992 sprinter; and Lemon Drop Kid, 2000 older male). Schulhofer, who found his greatest success working with jockeys Julie Krone (who rode Colonial Affair to victory in the 1993 Belmont) and José Santos (who in 1999 entered the winner's circle at Belmont aboard Lemon Drop Kid), won 1,119 races, and his horses earned purses of more than $52 million. He was inducted into the Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame in 1992 and retired in 2001.
